Basil Pasta Bar has opened a new location! With the original one on Davie Street, Kitsilano, Specifically Yew Street is the home of a new budget friendly pasta spot.

If you are unfamiliar with Basil, they are known for their $7.95 create your own pasta menu. Of course there are up charges for special items like gnocchi, but for me, you can't beat the basics.

With choices like shrimp, smoked salmon, goats cheese, and asparagus, you can't go wrong. Dinner for two for under $20, makes me a very happy man.

Kits Sushi is just off of Cornwall on Yew street. A prime location right by Kits Beach surrounded

by good other establishments like Hapa, Nook, and Local.

I come here every now and then since I just work down the street and get

there 2 item + miso soup $6.95 special.

Miso soup...what to say, it is good, that's it.

Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Tempura Roll

You have the option to choose from a number of menu items. I am a sucker for Spicy Tuna Rolls
so I naturally chose it. Spicy Tuna Roll is quite good here, the Salmon Tempura roll was kind of 'bleh' but otherwise good. I have no really tried much else off of the menu
so cannot comment on how other things are.

I used to come here when it was called Kitsilano Sushi..I don't know when they changed names

but it had been a good 6 or 7 years since I had last come here. Much to the dismay of the servers, my dad and I (being frugal) would order their 18 piece sushi special and split it between the two of us.

I started coming back here in the Summer of 2012 and it was pretty much the same as I remember, they still had their $5.95 special, and now being a cheap student I would still get it.

My heart broke a little bit on this particular visit. Sometime in the last two months they changed

the $5.95 price to $6.95. I'm not sure which emotion I should be feeling..anger?..sadness? .. betrayal?

All kidding aside, I came for an early lunch and went with the special anyways.

So what does $6.95 now get you?

I find the rolls to be usually pretty good quality here. I find they have made them a bit bigger

which may seem like a good thing but personally prefer a bit smaller.

For $7 I was satiated nicely and have no complaints.

I'm a little choked about the price increase, but they have had that going on for years and years and

eventually people raise their prices. 

In case anyone cares about miso soup (I know I do) here it is.

A funny little anecdote, a young girl, no older than 3 was having lunch

with her mom at the same time. When the waitress came to take their order,

she ever so quite elequently asked for miso soup, and yummy soba.I think

it was supposed to be yaki-soba but I can't deny that it is not yummy. I thought it was

cute/funny...don't judge me!

I love eating breakfast, I also love lunch and dinner, but for the purpose of this post I'll stick with breakfast. I had been to Juliet's Cafe last summer for brunch and I remember being pleased with it, so before venturing over to Vanier Park my girlfriend and I stopped in for something to eat.

The interior was nice with wooden floors and an open spacious dining area. A fire place kept the place nice and toasty. At this restaurant you order first and then go find a place to sit down. I like this better because you don't have to worry about splitting up the bill with other people, you can just pay for your own meal and sit and enjoy it.

My girlfriend got some English Breakfast tea to sip on while we waited for our food. I don't drink tea unless it's iced so I refrained from the hot beverage. To eat I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict and my girlfriend ordered the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict.

The meal consisted of two poached eggs with ham on sourdough with Parmesan sauce and roasted potatoes. It was incredibly tasty, I can never seem to poach eggs well at home but these ones were perfectly cooked.  I really liked the Parmesan sauce that topped the dish, it was very tasty.

I wasn't impressed with the portion of food, for over $10 there wasn't really a whole lot there. Some fresh fruit would have been a nice addition. I remember going to provence marinaside for brunch and also being disappointed with the amount of food...I'm 20 years old ok I need big portions!

I almost considered getting one of their sandwich's that I saw posted up on the menu, there was a roasted lamb sandwich which sounded fantastic.

I like that this place is family owned, they have a variety of family pictures posted up on the walls which almost makes you feel as if you are eating in a kitchen at someone elses home.

Final Thoughts:-Food was very tasty and well prepared

-Portions were not big enough for my liking

- Would be a great place to stop before walking to Granville Island or relaxing at Kits Beach.
