Kits Sushi (Kitsilano)

Kits Sushi,
1518 Yew Street, Vancouver
http://www.foodler.com/kits-sushi/14855

Sushi = Good
Beach= Good
Sushi + Beach = Good Good

Kits Sushi is just off of Cornwall on Yew street. A prime location right by Kits Beach surrounded
by good other establishments like Hapa, Nook, and Local.

I come here every now and then since I just work down the street and get
there 2 item + miso soup $6.95 special.

Miso Soup

Miso soup...what to say, it is good, that's it.

Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Tempura Roll

You have the option to choose from a number of menu items. I am a sucker for Spicy Tuna Rolls
so I naturally chose it. Spicy Tuna Roll is quite good here, the Salmon Tempura roll was kind of 'bleh' but otherwise good. I have no really tried much else off of the menu
so cannot comment on how other things are.

Verdict:
Good quick eats
Does not break the bank

Kitsaya Sushi - Kitsilano

Kitsaya Sushi
3105 West Broadway Vancouver, B.C.

I used to come here when it was called Kitsilano Sushi..I don't know when they changed names
but it had been a good 6 or 7 years since I had last come here. Much to the dismay of the servers, my dad and I (being frugal) would order their 18 piece sushi special and split it between the two of us.

I started coming back here in the Summer of 2012 and it was pretty much the same as I remember, they still had their $5.95 special, and now being a cheap student I would still get it.

My heart broke a little bit on this particular visit. Sometime in the last two months they changed
the $5.95 price to $6.95. I'm not sure which emotion I should be feeling..anger?..sadness? .. betrayal?
All kidding aside, I came for an early lunch and went with the special anyways.

So what does $6.95 now get you?

6 piece california roll
6 piece yam tempura roll
6 piece tuna roll
miso soup

I find the rolls to be usually pretty good quality here. I find they have made them a bit bigger
which may seem like a good thing but personally prefer a bit smaller.
For $7 I was satiated nicely and have no complaints.
I'm a little choked about the price increase, but they have had that going on for years and years and
eventually people raise their prices.

In case anyone cares about miso soup (I know I do) here it is.
A funny little anecdote, a young girl, no older than 3 was having lunch
with her mom at the same time. When the waitress came to take their order,
she ever so quite elequently asked for miso soup, and yummy soba.I think
it was supposed to be yaki-soba but I can't deny that it is not yummy. I thought it was
cute/funny...don't judge me!

Gawa Sushi Revisited - North Delta

Gawa Sushi - North Delta
Hey everyone, I recently reviewed this restaurant but really had a limited selection from the
menu  so I revisited it with my girlfriend, to try some other items

We got a couple items, Yam Roll, Avocado Roll, and Salmon Nigiri.

Appetizer Tempura - $5.50
I was craving Tempura so we got the Appetizer Tempura as well. It came with
two pieces of prawn and 3 pieces of vegetables

Agedashi Tofu - $3.95
Lastly we got the Agedashi Tofu.

Thoughts:
- The servers are pretty friendly here, and are always very nice to my brother and I (complimentary appy's are always good)

-Out of the different items we got I have nothing negative to say, I found the food to be pretty typical for a sushi joint in Delta (you can't compare with what you can get in Vancouver), which was alright with me.

-For being so close to my house I am happy to find a place that has decent prices to match decent food.

Gawa Sushi - A New Place in North Delta!?

Gawa Sushi - North Delta

So this is kind of a big deal to me. Where I live there a severe lack of restaurants
to chose from when it comes to eating out.
When I moved back home and found out we had a new sushi place I was quite excited.

Menu

So me and my brother went to check it out after some skim boarding at the beach.
After a look at the menu I concluded that there was a decent selection and the prices were typical for our area (much cheaper can be found in Vancouver).

California Roll

We are cheap guys so we split a California Roll
between the two of us. The roll was decent enough, they taste similar in most
places I have been to. We had the salmon maki roll too but no pictures. I thought they did a good enough job with the food.

Miso Soup
We are both big fans of miso soup and it did not dissapoint. After being in the cold (yes we went to the beach without any sun) a nice hot cup of soup is fantastic.

Verdict:
-I really can not give much of an opinion on this place seeing as we only tried a couple
menu items.
-What we did have we enjoyed.
- I have heard mixed reviews from friends, some said it was
great others said it was terrible. I enjoyed myself.

Tentatsu - Hastings

Tentatsu is one of my go to sushi joints.
I do have options living in Burnaby and it`s either Sushi Garden or
Tentatsu I go to when I need my fix. I went for dinner with my girlfriend and decided to start off sharing the Bento Box (B). The menu has quite a few items but we seem to always order the same stuff..maybe we're just boring like that.

Plenty of food for two people in my opinion, this one came with assorted tempura, salad, dynamite roll, California roll, and 1 piece each of salmon, tuna, and ebi nigiri. The fruit I could really care less about..

You also get a ebi sunomono. The ligthing was a bit weird, and my camera is pretty cheap so there is a bit of a organge glint to all the pictures. The Ebi Sunomono was good but it is better if you order it off of the menu, you get a bigger prawn in it.

Lastly, a miso soup.
At dinner this all costs around $11 Which is great since you get to try a variety of things, to be honest I was already getting full after just eating the Box but sometimes my brain does not think of consequences.

We also got the Spicy Combo, at this point I knew we were going to be taking some of it home.

This included a California roll, Salmon roll, and Tuna roll, covered with spicy sauce, very good.
They pretty much put the sauce they use on spicy tuna rolls on these ones so you can imagine it would taste good.
Kind of weird, the gyoza came out last after we were almost done our food. I had in fact forgot about it and regretted ordering it because I was full already. I am not sure why they list it under appetizer when the always bring it out last.

I like the prices at Tentatsu and the food has always been consistently good which is why I always find myself coming back. Dinner time can get a little busy and there is not a lot of waiting room so it can get a little awkward. Service isn't really the greatest but I am not really expecting it when I just want a quick cheap eat.

Cheers!

Fish on Rice - Burnaby South

Biting off more than I can chew.. This happens to me quite a lot. The voice of reason in my head often goes unheard and my impulses take over.

How does this relate to Fish on Rice? The first time I dined here (keep in mind it's all you can eat) I grossly overestimated how much I could really eat, and left feeling as though I was about to burst.

Unfortunately for my girlfriend, she had to sit and wait for 30 minutes as I slowly ate my meal, struggling to finish each bite.

Well this time would be different, I told my self I can always order more if I'm hungry, just order one prawn tempura not six.. The price isn't too bad for dinner here, it's $21.95/person which, yeah you could get a decent meal at a sushi place for two but oh well. This also includes a soft drink.

We got the requisite sunomono, I got tako sunomono, which I believe is had octopus in it..(please correct me if I'm wrong). I like to start of the meal with something acidic like this since I'll be eating raw fish, I feel better making my stomach acid more acidic.
We of course got some miso soup because..well why wouldn't we?
I like the miso soup here, better than some regular non AYCE places.
I wish I could find miso soup mix at the store that actually tastes good..I have tried some store bought stuff and it wasn't great.
Beef Tataki is one of the sole reasons we got for AYCE, I think we ordered 40 pieces of this..it is just so amazing. I don't often see this offered at regular sushi spots, and if it is, it's usually fairly costly, so we order a generous amount here. A definite must for any patron of Fish on Rice.
Crispy Chicken Skins, hmm these are really not my thing. Crispy chicken yes, but deep frying the chicken skin..they may taste good but my mind says no. They do taste great dipped in the sauce from the beef tataki (fyi) but do some cardio to help your heart after.
Here we go, something I can do.. Chicken Karrage, I love wings, these are wings, therefore I love em. There was a lot of batter but oh how do I love that crunch.. my poor body.. very tasty.
I did not realise that when I ordered the Deep Fried Gyoza, that they actually had a coating on them when they got fried, I thought they were just regular ones tossed in a deep fryer. Nonetheless I enjoyed them, very hot when they came out but very good.

I was unaware that ika meant squid, so I was pretty pumped when they brought out calamari. I'm not sure what it is but I just love the taste of it. Naturally I had to order seconds of the Ika Karrage.

Next, the Spicy Scallop Cone, and the..I'm not sure cone..(I forgot what it was). I really like the spicy scallop cone, but wasn't too big on the other one..unfortunately I don't remember what it was so I will most likely order it again.
Despite the less than pleasing aesthetics, the Spicy Tuna roll was good. I can't help but order this one anywhere I go because they are always so d*mn good! There was quite a bit of rice, so I was happy I only got two because the rice fills me up so quickly.
Lastly, I got the Burnaby Roll, and the Vancouver Roll. I am unsure of which one was which but  I didn't enjoy the one with the smoked salmon on top and the cream cheese. The cream cheese was very strong tasting and ruined it for me, the other roll was similar to a california roll but also had prawn tempura in it.
The first two times I had dined at this restaurant I was about ready to write it off and not come back. I did not really enjoy my meals that much and didn't think it was worth going.

This trip put the restaurant back in my good graces and I will probably return  again. If I stick with what I like and don't go overboard, a pleasant meal can be had.

Sushi Garden - Burnaby

Sushi Garden is a close by spot that I have been to once before and have been wanting to return for quite some time. Not wanting to cook food after school gave me the perfect opportunity to drag my girlfriend for a quick dinner.

It was around 5pm and it wasn't too busy so we were seated right away.

We started with the House Salad
There is something about the dressing they use in Japanese restaurants that I love. A very big salad and it was perfect to share. We both enjoyed it.

Next up came some Spicy Agedashi Tofu

I don't eat tofu..fermented soy beans, not thing. However, this dish was delicious. The crispy exterior and the sauce made this dish edible for me since I can't do straight up tofu, but I will order this again.

The order: Bill's Roll, Avocado Roll, House Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll
We tend to opt towards ordering an assortment of rolls to share, rather than getting separate items solely for ourselves. The spicy tuna rolls were great, I am a sucker for these and they rarely disappoint.

House Roll - Lots of stuff, tuna, salmon, crab, some yellow thing?
I liked that they top their bigger rolls with tobiko, it adds some extra colour. I liked this roll, it was a bit of a mouth full but I managed to make short work of these. I am glad that we came back to Sushi Garden because I enjoyed the sushi here so it's good to know we have a nice spot close to home.

Bill's Roll - Yam & Smoked Salmon
Smoked Salmon is always a great addition flavor wise to a roll. My girlfriend ordered this one so she ate the majority of them but of the few I tried they were good. Again this one had fish roe on it which I liked.

Nagoya Sushi...Holy Shashimi ! - Surrey

First off, I must say how have I never heard of this place before! My ex gym partner (we still talk) asked me if I wanted to go to this sushi place he likes in Surrey. Naturally I asked the name and then looked it up on Yelp and Urbanspoon. No blog posts on it, but the user reviews were good, I was game. He was telling me about how awesome their Sake Don (Salmon) was and I figured this place sounded legit.

Even though he had been here before he was too busy talking and drove right by the place, we had to do a "legal" u-turn to get back. It is located in the Green Timbers Plaza, next to a bar and liquor store. A big illuminated sign saying SUSHI gives it away.

With any dine in order you get one complimentary bowl of miso soup, extras are 50 cents. The soup was good, nothing extraordinary..it's miso soup, pretty hard to go wrong with it. As we sipped on it another surprise arrived at the table...Free food!

Apparently dine-in customers get free food. Wow I can't argue with that..bring it on! The waitress brought out two Salmon Patties. They were a very decent size and quite tasty. I think serving complimentary appetizers is a great way to get customers to come back..well at least I'll  be coming back.

My friend ordered the Sake Don $10.50. There was a good 10 huge pieces of Salmon Sashimi...like literally massive pieces of fish. I was quite impressed with his dish. My friend and I enjoy working out quite a bit so we enjoy eating a lot of food, he even struggled finishing this. There was also rice and a small salad served with this.

I decided I would order some rolls. I got a Salmon Maki, Spicy Tuna, and Beef Rolls. All of the rolls were very tasty and very filling. Again they put a lot of fish in these rolls which was awesome. I think for the three it was just under $10.  The spicy tuna wasn't very spicy but still was very good. Now the best part about these rolls was the Salmon Maki. If you look in the top left corner you can see one of the rolls had kind of fell apart..want to know why? because there was a huge piece of salmon inside it.
That is the size of the pieces of salmon they put inside there maki rolls...it was only $2.50 for the 6 rolls but the amount of salmon inside was comparable to an order of salmon sashimi at most places.

I was very impressed with this place and look forward to going back.

I believe this place is Korean run by a family it looked like, and let me say they are doing a great job of it. Complimentary food and large pieces of fish..they have recommendation any day.

Apparently once a week on Wednesdays they make their rolls from a combination of brown, white, and black rice, to encourage healthier eating.

I took home a menu so hopefully I can scan it and add some pictures.. thanks for reading!

Final Thoughts:
-This place was awesome...Go!
